considering the vast choice of VIDEOBALL controller options, I believe it'd be helpful to examine which controllers might be best for this game in terms of accuracy, comfort, and pleasure.
I have played hours of VIDEOBALL using a standard DS4, Hori FPS, and standard XB1 on PC.
my rankings so far are:
- arcade stick
the Hori stands out to me because it is solid in your hand. it fits. it is extremely precise. because it currently only works on console (PS4), it is the only reason I can still enjoy VIDEOBALL on PS4. it is a very smooth experience. the difference in performance between the Hori and the standard DS4 is enormous. you wouldn't think it would be, but it is.
Hori also beats out standard XB1 controller in terms of precision and comfort. however, the difference here is not quite as big. where the DS4 feels sluggish and imprecise, the XB1 is a lot snappier. easier to maneuver with. prolonged play still causes strain, but it isn't near as bad as the DS4.
the DS4 is a great controller, but it isn't a great VIDEOBALL controller.
if you're trying to play VIDEOBALL seriously, don't play with an arcade stick either. it is uncomfortable and weird. it is an awkward experience and maintaining flow and precision of movement with a stick is difficult with almost no benefit other than imagining yourself playing an arcade game.
I have the XB1 Elite controller coming in tomorrow and I will update about whether I prefer that to the Hori, but I expect at least it will be (feel) better than the standard XB1.
the only controller I can't discuss is the Steam controller. so if anyone is using that for VB, post about it!
EDIT: I can try with a 360 Elite pad on PC if people care. I haven't because I believe the XB1 improves on the 360's design in almost every way.
EDIT 2: you can run the Hori controller on PC using JoyToKey, but it greatly diminishes the controllers feel and accuracy.
